News and Updates on the Jos situation

There were recent clashes in Jos with about 2 people feared dead but it seems those in authority are beginning to look into the matter with more seriousness. Please let's keep talking about it. Our plans with the red cross are ongoing and we'll be bring updates soon. Thanks again to all those who have put up the banner on their blogs, we appreciate it.

Jos — Jos paramount ruler, Gbong Gwom Jos, Gyang Buba, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar, has waded into the ongoing crisis in Jos between the Berom natives and the Fulani, calling on the warring groups to lay down their arms and come to a roundtable to resolve their differences.

Speaking at stakeholders' meeting in Jos on Tuesday, Gyang tongue-lashed both Christians and Muslims in the state of claiming to worship the true God of creation but go a head to kill their neighbours.

"You ought to know that the tenets of the two religions that they do not give anybody the authority to take the life of any other person," he said.

According to him, even secular law of Nigeria does not give anybody the permission to take life, insisting that as responsible citizens of Nigeria and of Plateau State, "everyone should respect the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and all federal state and local government laws".

He expressed the desire of the Jos traditional council to dialogue with whoever has the intention to hold peace talk with it, pointing out that before issues could be properly resolved everyone must be open and sincere with due respect to each other in the state.

"Everybody must avoid personal attacks and let us address issues involved and resolved them accordingly. We should be able to restore lasing peace not only in Plateau State but in the entirety country," he stressed.

Plateau state commissioner of police in his remarks reiterated that nobody is happy with the development in the state, lamenting that his men had been picking corpses of innocent people from the streets in Jos daily.

He however promised that security agencies would continue to maintain law and order, but warned that henceforth any neighbourhood that any corpse was again picked up, the traditional ruler or the ward heads of such areas would be quizzed.

He said, "On a daily basis, security agencies are picking up dead bodies from the streets of Jos" adding that such madness must be stopped.

According to him, all efforts to retrieve arms from the youths have not yielded results, while also advocating the support of the parents of the rampaging youths and warned that if the situation in Jos is not brought under control, there would be a replay of what is going on in the Niger Delta in Jos where parents would have no control on their wards.

In his remark, the Emir of Wase, who is the Chairman, JNI in the state, expressed optimism that soon, with the calibre of people in attendance at the peace talks, a solution would be found to the problem of Jos.

The meeting, which later went into close door and had in attendance the Emir of Wase, Dr. Haruna Abdullahi; Commissioner of Police, Ikechukwu Aduba; the representative of Sultan of Sokoto, Danmaliki Sokoto, Alhaji Umar Abubakar; Dr. Aliyu Tilde from office of the National Security Adviser, AIG Hamisu Ali Jos (rtd), members of the Joint Traditional Council, the officials of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in all the five local government areas; among other dignitaries.

Renewed Violence in Jos.

Hello people,

This is bad news to share about Jos. The people still need all the help they can get. Please talk to the people you know in the government, federal and state, please give to settled in volunteer agencies like the Red Cross or NEMA. And please keep praying for peace in that part of the country. We are still working out specifics of how this team will contribute and will share the news with you as soon as possible.

Scores of people are thought to have been killed in clashes between pastoralists from the surrounding hillside region and villagers close to the central Nigerian city of Jos.

Police sources on Sunday put the number of dead at just eight, but witnesses reported many more bodies, with one estimate rising to more than 100 people.

Some of the bodies were reported to be charred and scarred by machete blows and the AFP news agency reported there were many children among the dead.

Yvonne Ndege, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Abuja, said: "There is conflicting information about the number of people who may have been killed.

"Police are saying about eight people have been killed but I have spoken to a number of people in Jos who said the number is higher."

A reporter with the Reuters news agency counted 100 bodies piled in the street.

Witnesses said that the pastoralists staged an overnight raid in the village of Dogo Nahawa, firing into the air and then attacking those who came out of their houses.

"They came around 3 O'clock in the morning and they started shooting into the air," Peter Jang, a Dogo Nahawa resident, said.

"The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes," he said.

Ndege reported: "A senior police chief said the perpetrators of this attack came in from Bauchi state. The fighting exploded between herdsmen from Bauchi and villagers.

"The Red Cross, is reporting that as a consequence of this violence at least 5-600 people are leaving the area in fear of their lives."

Nearby Jos, the capital of Plateau state, was the scene of sectarian violence which killed hundreds of people in January.

The city, which lies at the crossroads of Nigeria's Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, saw four days of clashes.

I’m writing this a motivated person, galvanized into action by the reactions of those around me.
I would be honest to say when this idea came into my mind I had no inkling as to how it will be accomplished; Suffice it to say I was full of strength and determination but no solid ideas..
All I did was send mails to those I felt would come to my rescue-Point me in the right direction, Ask for their Participation in this project.

Some replied immediately, others haven’t, at least not yet, but being as optimistic and hopeful as ever, I believe that they’d get to back to me.
I wrote a post on my blog titled SAVE OUR SOUL-BE COMPASSIONATE. And I want to thank everyone who contributed to that post by commenting, May you all always be strengthened.
I want to thank Suru and Leggy who went out of their way to send me a personalized mail. I’m most grateful.
I’d still get to Suru..
I have to thank Muyiwa (people in the limelight) for positively asking me questions that set my brain in motion and really made the concept more solid. He did do that and also promised to assist me in whatever way necessary.
I want to thank Sting (Nigerian Scorpio) for embracing my ideas and encouraging me so much I finally believed in what I had set out to do. She did make me believe and see that I could do it. To her, will I be eternally grateful.
I want to thank Suru for setting this whole plan in motion by creating this blog thereby actualizing this initiative. She named it and did it so effortlessly. Simply put, she simplified our job; she doesn’t kid-Suru, Always the Action chic! You rock!
Not everyday would you find such people willing to offer themselves to serve a purpose that they were not sure of its origin like Sting, Muyiwa and Suru..
I earnestly pray you all, Nigerian bloggers and other bloggers have the zeal to help and give; do so by making this project -WE ARE JOS a huge and mighty success.
I hope it’s not too much to ask you to sacrifice something little for someone in a very much disadvantaged position? Because that is the best we can do for them given the circumstance. Please, let us all do this. We would feel better when we do.

It all started when I received this email:
I'm sorry to bug you but I have a concept which i would really explain
on my monday post titled ' SAVE OUR SOUL'.Most times I've often wondered why we Nigerians
complain and proffer no explanations or solutions to the problems that
herald us. In whatever small way I can, I try to solve a problem or
even make an effort.
What exactly is my point?
It was the effort of wyclef jean that made other stars come together
to give towards Haiti.. I noticed some Naija bloggers even gave
towards Haiti while at the same time decrying what happened in Jos,
VERBALLY while saying God should help Nigeria..
Please everyone should wake up for Nigeria.. Lets give towards those
who have lost everything in Jos.. It was really devastating. student,
working class,everyone, we can do something..We can enlist the
connections we have and also get across to Nigerian
actors,actresses,models,

musicians,I'm not saying they
shouldn't use their money as they please, but come on.. A little
thought for those ravaged with violence and bloodshed..
I'd be dedicating my post on today to this and subsequent issues.
If you agree with me, help me plan this thing anyway whatsoever
available..If they can't help them, Let us, that way, people would
help them and extend to Nigeria as a whole.
